Passage 1

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

Television is one of today’s most powerful and widespread means of mass communication. It directly influences our lives on both a short and long-term basis; it brings worldwide situations into our homes; it affords extensive opportunities

for acquiring higher education ;and it performs these tasks in a convenient yet

effective manner. We are all aware of the popularly accepted applications of television ,particularly those relative to entertainment and news broadcasting. Television, however, has also been a vital link in unmanned deep space exploration

(such as the Voyager I and Ⅱ missions), in providing visions from hazardous are

as (such as proximity to radioactive materials or environments) in underwater research, in viewing storms moving across a metropolitan area (the camera being placed in a weather-protective enclosure near the top of a tower), etc. The earth’s weather satellites also use television cameras for viewing cloud cover and movements from 20,000 miles in space. Infrared filters are used for night views, and several systems include a spinningmirror arrangement to permit wide-area views

from the camera. Realizing the unlimited applications for today’s television,

one may thus logically ponder the true benefits of confining most of our video a

ctivities to the mass-entertainment field.

Conventional television broadcasting within the United States centres around free enterprise and public ownership. This requires funding by commercial sponsors,

and thus functions in a revenue-producing business manner. Television in USSR-subjected areas, conversely, is a governmemt-owned and maintained arrangement. While such arrangements eliminate the need for commercial sponsorship,it also has the possibility of limiting the type of programs available to viewers(a number of

purely entertainment programs similar to the classic “Bewitched”, however, have been seen on these government-controlled networks. All isn’t as gray and dismal as the uninformed might unnecessarily visualize).

A highly modified form of television called Slow-Scan TV is presently being used

by many Amateur Radio operators to provide direct visual communications with almost any area of the world .This unique visual mode recently allowed people on the tiny South Pacific country of Pitcairn Island to view, for the first time in their lives, distant areas and people of the world . The chief radio Amateur and communications officer of Pitcairn, incidentally, is the legendary Tom Christian-great, great grandson of Tom Christian of “Mutiny on the Bounty” fame. Radio Amateurs in many lands worked together for several months establishing visual capabilities for Pitcairners. The results have proven spectacular, yet the visual capabilities have only been used for health education, or welfare purposes. Commercial TV is still unknown to natives of that tiny country.

Numerous other forms of television and visual communication have also been used

on a semi-restricted basis. This indicates the many untapped areas of video and

television which may soon be exploited on a more widespread basis. The old clich

é of a picture being worth a thousand words truly has merit.

21. According to the passage, applications of television are easily accepted in _______________________________ .

A) metropolitan area B) deep space exploration

C) programs about entertainment and news D) remote areas

22. Which of the following statements is true in the eyes of the writer?

A) Applications of television are beneficial to big cities.

A) positive B) indifferent C) critical D) dangerous

Passage 2

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

The forest from which Man takes his timber is the tallest and most impressive plant community on Earth. In terms of Man’s brief life it appears permanent and unchanging, save for the seasonal growth and fall of the leaves, but to forester it represents the climax of a long succession of events.

No wooded landscape we see today has been forest for all time. Plants have minimum requirements of temperature and moisture and, in ages past, virtually every part of Earth’s surface has at some time been either too dry or too cold for plants to survive. However, as soon as climatic conditions change in favour of plant life, a fascinating sequence of changes occurs, called a primary succession. 

First to colonize the barren land are the lowly lichens, surviving on bare rock.

Slowly, the acids produced by these organisms crack the rock surface, plant debris accumulates, and mosses establish a shallow root-hold. Ferns may follow and,

with short grasses and shrubs, gradually form a covering of plant life. Roots probe even deeper into the developing soil and eventually large shrubs give way to the first trees. These grow rapidly, cutting off sunlight from the smaller plants, and soon establish complete domination-closing their ranks and forming a climax community which may endure for thousands of years. 

Yet even this community is not everlasting. Fire may destroy it outright and settlers may cut it down to gain land for pasture or cultivation. If the land is then abandoned, a secondary succession will take over, developing much faster on the more hospitable soil. Shrubs and trees are among the early invaders, their seeds carried by the wind, by birds and lodged in the coats of mammals. 

For as long as it stands and thrives, the forest is a vast machine, storing ener

gy and many elements essential for life.

26. What does the forest strike mankind as permanent?

A) The trees are in community. B) The forest is renewed each season.

C) Man’s life is short in comparison. D) It is an essential part of our lives.

27. What has sometimes caused plants to die out of the past?

A) Interference from foresters. B) Variations in climate.

C) The absence of wooded land. D) The introduction of new type of plants.

28. In a “primary succession”, what makes it possible for mosses to take root?A) The type of rock. B) The amount of sunlight.

C) The amount of moisture. D) The effect of lichens.

29. What conditions are needed for shrubs to become established?

A) Ferns must take root. B) The ground must be covered with grass.

C) More soil must accumulate. D) Smaller plants must die out.

30. Why is a “secondary succession” quicker?

A) The ground is more suitable. B) There is more space for new plants.

B) Birds and animals bring new seeds. D) It is supported by the forest.

Passage 3

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

Feather cloaks are the most spectacular of all objects of native Hawaiian manufacture. In the highly stratified society of the islands before their discovery by Captain James Cook in 1788, the cloaks were never very numerous, but powerful chiefs often acquired several through inheritance or as battle prizes.

Although the feathers were gathered by the common people to defray part of their

taxes, and women were permitted to clean and sort them, only men of high rank, surrounded by sacred taboos, were allowed to make the cloaks. The manufacturing process involved tying small bunches of red, yellow, green, or black feathers with olona fiber. Large cloaks like the royal robe worn by Kamehameha I , the first king of all the islands, required some half-million feathers.

Today these cloaks are ethnological treasures, but to the early ship captain they were little more than seemingly plentiful curiosities that the Hawaiians highly valued but gave away or traded for such trifles as iron knives. In turn, the Europeans traded these curiosities. This practice began with Cook’s officers, who traded the cloak now in Leningrad in exchange for provisions.

In 1825, Lord Byron, commander of the British ship Blonde, predicted that “the

splendid war-cloak” would soon be more easily found in Europe than in Hawaii. B

righam found only five in Hawaii when he made his featherwork survey in 1899. To

day twenty of the fifty known cloaks are still in the British Isles.

31. The early ship captains who visited Hawaii were _______________________________ .

33. Feathers used in making cloaks were gathered mainly by _______________________________ .

A) high-ranking women B) high-ranking men C) people of low rank D) powerful male chiefs

34. It is clear from the passage that before the arrival of Captain Cook Ha

waiian society was _______________________________ .

A) lacking in religious organization B) peaceful and prosperous

C) rigidly class structured D) lacking in practical skills

35. Why would the feather cloaks be more easily found in European countries

than in Hawaii?

A) They were brought out by Captain James Cook.

B) They were traded in exchange for supply of food and drinks.

C) They were fewer feather cloaks found in Hawaii.

D) They were brought out by Brigham.

Passage 4

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

The brain is organized into different regions, each responsible for different

functions, and in humans this organization is very marked. The largest parts of

the brain are the cerebral hemispheres, which occupy most of the interior of the

skull. They are layered structures, the most complex being the outer layer, known as the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), where the nerve cells are extremely densely

packed to allow great interconnectivity. Its function is not fully understood,

but we can get some indication of its purpose from studies of animals that have

had it removed. A dog, for example, can still move in a coordinated manner, will

eat and sleep, and even bark if it is disturbed. However, it also becomes blind and loses its sense of smell-more significantly, perhaps, it loses all interest in its environment, not responding to people or to its name, nor to other dogs, even of the opposite sex. It also loses all ability to learn. In effect, it loses the characteristics that we generally refer to as indicating intelligence-awareness, interest and interaction with an environment, and an ability to adapt and learn. Thus the cerebral cortex seems to be the seat of the higher order functions of the brain, and the core of intelligence.

The cerebral cortex has been the subject of investigation by researchers for many years, and is slowly revealing its secrets. It demonstrates a localization of

functions, in that different areas of the cortex fulfill different functions, such

as motion control, hearing ,and vision. The visual part of the cortex is especially interesting. In the visual cortex, electrical stimulation of the cells can

produce the sensation of light, and detailed analysis has shown that specific layers of neurons are sensitive to particular orientations of input stimuli, so th

at one layer responds maximally to horizontal lines, while another responds to vertical ones. Although much of this structure is genetically predetermined, the orientation-specific layout of the cells appears to be learnt at an early stage. Animals brought up in an environment of purely horizontal lines do not develop neuron structures that respond to vertical orientations, showing that these structures are developed due to environmental input and not purely from genetic predetermination. This is called self-organization of the visual cortex since there is no external teacher to guide the development of these structures.

We are all aware of the popularly accepted applications of television , particularly those relative to entertainment and news broadcasting . 

22.答案D。

t of our video activites to the massentertinment field.(人们可能逻辑性地认为我们看电视活动的好处都限制在大规模的娱乐活动上面了。)

本题答案D)可在短文第二段中找到:… it also has the possibility of limiting the type of programs available to vi

ewers (a number of purely entertainment programs similar to the classic “ Bewitched ”, however, have been seen on these government-controlled networks. All isn’t as gray and dismal as the uninformed might unnecessarily visualize). 

25.答案A。

Passage Four

【详细解答】脑组织的特点在文章第一句中就给予了清楚地说明:“The brain is organised into different regions, each responsible for different functions, and in humans this organization is very marked.”

some indication of its purpose from studies of animals that have had it removed

.” 这里its function 指的就是the cerebral cortex’s function.

seat 本意是指sth. used or made for sitting on, e.g. a chair, box, bench, the floor. 既然文章第一段最后一句说“Thus the cerebral cortex seems to be the seat of the higher

order functions of the brain, and the core of intelligence. ”那么B)和D)不合适,第一段中间“They are layered structures, the most complex being the outer layer, known as the cerebral cortex, where the nerve cells are extremely densely packed to allow great interconnecticity.”

39. 答案A。

【详细解答】依据文章第二段中“The visual part of the cortex is especially interesting.…and detailed analysis has shown that specific layers of neurons are sensitive to particular orientations of input stimuli,…”

Health is also the foundation of one’s success.Sickness may make it impossible for a man to pursue his career effectively. On the other hand if one is in good health he can go all out to overcome the obstacles on his way to success. 

In order to maintain and build up our health,we should exercise every day to strengthen our muscles. We should also keep good hours.Getting up early, we can take breath of the fresh morning air which helps us a lot.As the old saying goes: Early to rise and early to go to bed makes one happy and healthy. It is equally important to remember the proverb “Prevention is better than cure.”If we pay attention to our health, we can reduce the chances of getting sick.
